Battle of the UK Multihull Titans?
How many 100% UK-based designers and builders of cruiser sailing catamarans can you name? Go on, have a think. Now… how many of them were duking it out on the water last weekend?
That’s right – all two of them! The scene? The Saltash Sailing Club and Plym Yacht Club’s race from Plymouth to Fowey and back. The battle? Legendary.
In the blue corner: Sagitta, the sleek 30ft Richard Woods Designs – a round-bilge performance cruiser with serious pedigree. Aboard her? None other than Richard himself, plus multihull veterans Debbie and Pip Patterson. Pip, son of Multihull Centre founder Pat Patterson, has multihulls in his DNA – he and Debbie practically grew up in boat sheds!
And in the red corner: Hissy Fit, the Dazcat 1495 racer-cruiser, fearsome on the racecourse and helmed by Simon Biffa Baker Baker – who’s been building Dazcats since the ‘90s and knows these boats like the back of his epoxy-covered hand.
The results? Well, the gods of wind and ratings clearly didn’t want to play favourites. Hissy Fit stormed ahead on the way to Fowey, but Sagitta came back fighting, flying full sail through gusty conditions to snatch victory on the return leg.
Two boats. One epic weekend. And a whole lot of British multihull know-how on display - decades of expertise out enjoying each other's company and the water, just as it should be.
